Feel free to use these on your own and your family's garments. If you pass these instructions to others, please be sure to quote the original source.

Some garment pieces do not need to have a rib welt or a hem. A knitted on edging can offer a different finish, e.g. sideways knitted skirts, shawls, summer tops, etc.

SIMPLE 3 STITCH EDGING. Also known as Worm edge. Most knitters will know this one but you may not know the variations that follow it. With wrong side of work facing and using a 3 eyed transfer tool, pick up 3 stitches from the edge of the garment. *Knit 6 rows, pick up next 3 stitches from edge onto the same needles.* Repeat * to * as required.

LOOPED EDGE. Work as above but knit 10 rows before picking up next stitches. This edge is not recommended for babies' clothes in case they catch their fingers.

POINTED EDGE. Work as for looped edge. After completing garment, pin out the loops into sharp points and steam press.

ROPE CABLE EDGE. With right side of work facing, work as for simple 3 stitch edge but knit 24 rows before picking up next stitches. When finished, *thread the second loop through the first loop.* The first loop is now disposed of and the second loop becomes the first. Repeat * to *.

There are many other kinds of edgings used in the patterns in my books.
