Feel free to use these on your own and your family's garments. If you pass these instructions on to others, please be sure to quote the original source.

The basic rules for successful stocking stitch hems, where the knit side is the right side are:- Knit the underside of the hem at mt-2. Knit the upper side of the hem at mt-1. Knit the fold line and the pick up row at mt+3.

For reversed stocking stitch hems work the fold line at mt-3 and turn up the hem by hand afterwards. When the garment piece is completed, a straight edge [presser bar] should be put through the hem and pulled to close up the stitches.

PLAIN HEM. Cast on with wy and k 1 r with nylon cord. Change to my and knit rs for depth of hem, knit fold line, knit rs for depth of hem, pick up sts on nylon cord.Continue knitting garment.

Sometimes a plain acrylic hem will not lay flat, this is due solely to the properties of the yarn. The following method will usually cure this.

LAY FLAT HEM. Cast on over alt ns with wy, k 1 r nylon cord. Change to my and knit 1 or 2 rs less than required for the depth of the hem. Try this out on your swatch before you start knitting. Bring up nwp ns and fill them with heels of adj sts, k required rs, pick up sts on nylon cord, continue knitting garment.

EASY PICOT HEM. Cast on as for lay flat hem and work same for first part of hem. Bring nwp ns to wp and knit fold line. Continue as for plain hem.

TURRET EDGE HEM. Insert card 1 from basic pack [or similar electronic pattern] and lock on any row. Knit plain to fold line, set machine to tuck and k 4 rs. Work other side of hem plain.

There are lots of other hems used in patterns in my books.
